Jet and accretion power in the most powerful Fermi blazars

چکیده
Among the blazars detected by the Fermi satellite, we have selected the 23 blazars that in the three months of survey had an average γ–ray luminosity above 10 erg s. For 17 out of the 23 sources we found and analysed X–ray and optical–UV data taken by the Swift satellite. With these data, implemented by archival and not simultaneous data, we construct the spectral energy distributions, and interpreted them with a simple one–zone, leptonic, synchrotron and inverse Compton model. When possible, we also compare different high energy states of single sources, like 0528+134 and 3C 454.3, for which multiple good sets of multi–wavelength data are available. In our powerful blazars the high energy emission always dominates the electromagnetic output, and the relatively low level of the synchrotron radiation often does not hide the accretion disk emission. We can then constrain the black hole mass and the disk luminosity. Both are large (i.e. masses equal or greater than 109M⊙ and disk luminosities above 10% of Eddington). By modelling the non–thermal continuum we derive the power that the jet carries in the form of bulk motion of particles and fields. On average, the jet power is found to be slightly larger than the disk luminosity, and proportional to the mass accretion rate.

Jets, black holes and disks in blazars
The Fermi and Swift satellites, together with ground based Cherenkov telescopes, has greatly improved our knowledge of blazars, namely Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars and BL Lac objects, since all but the most powerful emit most of their electro–magnetic output at γ–ray energies, while the very powerful blazars emit mostly in the hard X–ray region of the spectrum. Often they show coordinated variab...
متن کاملExtremes of the jet–accretion power relation of blazars, as explored by NuSTAR
Hard X-ray observations are crucial to study the non-thermal jet emission from high-redshift, powerful blazars. We observed two bright z > 2 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) in hard X-rays to explore the details of their relativistic jets and their possible variability. S5 0014+81 (at z = 3.366) and B0222+185 (at z = 2.690) have been observed twice by the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Arra...
متن کاملGeneral physical properties of bright Fermi blazars
We studied all blazars of known redshift detected by the Fermi satellite during its first three– months survey. For the majority of them, pointed Swift observations ensures a good multiwavelength coverage, enabling us to to reliably construct their spectral energy distributions (SED). We model the SEDs using a one–zone leptonic model and study the distributions of the derived interesting physic...
متن کاملRadio-optical-gamma-ray properties of MOJAVE AGN detected by Fermi/LAT
Aims. We use a sample of 83 core-dominated active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected from the MOJAVE (Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments) radio-flux-limited sample and detected with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) to study the relations between non-simultaneous radio, optical, and γ-ray measurements. Methods. We perform a multi-band statistical analysis to investigate the relation...
متن کاملSpectra and power of blazar jets
The spectra of blazars form a sequence which can be parametrized in term of their observed bolometric luminosity. At the most powerful extreme of the sequence we find objects whose jet power can rival the power extracted by accretion, while at the low power end of the sequence we find TeV and TeV candidate blazars, whose spectral properties can give information on the particle acceleration mech...
